About Momentum University 2018

Momentum University, or MoU, is a two-week summer intensive that serves as a “workshop” for the spring year-end performances performed by 1,000 Momentum dancers. The 60 dancers that participate in MoU are a part of our advanced teams. These are children who participated in our 30-week program in fourth grade and demonstrated exceptional effort and excellence.

Unlike a typical summer camp, MoU is not an open enrollment program. Our dancers earn their spots through exemplary behavior and adhering to Momentum’s “Big Four” (do my best, work hard, never give up, and be healthy). Participants all  have active roles in helping pull together a new show. They work together to develop their own costumes, backdrops, and playbill for their MoU performance on the Columbus Commons Stage, Thursday July 26, 5:30pm.

Each day is structured with dance and choreography, academic enrichment, visual art projects, guests speakers and guest-led activities from artists, musicians, public figures, and members of the community — all focused  on the Harlem Renaissance.

The Harlem Renaissance

Momentum’s year of Harlem Renaissance programming is in partnership with the city-wide celebration, I, Too, Sing America: The Harlem Renaissance at 100. In addition to the usual high energy, joyful performances that Momentum is known for, the Harlem Renaissance will bring new art forms and expression to the stage. Dancers will explore and experiment with spoken word and poetry as well as with different styles of dance such as tap. All of these new discoveries will be made through a historical lens, while learning about the artists and figures of the Harlem Renaissance who made these art forms what they are today.

Performances

The Momentum University Summer Performance is Thursday, July 26, at 5:30pm on the Columbus Commons Stage. The show is a part of the free Downtown Live Series thanks to the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation. Audience members are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets to stay and enjoy a full evening of entertainment. Momentum kicks off the evening at 5:30pm, followed by musicians Michael Glabicki of Rusted Root and Doc Robinson.

Save the date for Momentum’s grand year-end performances of The Harlem Renaissance at the Davidson Theatre, May 15 and 17, 2019, with showtimes at 10:30am and 1:00pm each day. 1,000 dancers from Momentum’s 30-Week program and advanced teams will perform.
