Momentum classes are based on a methodology known as the National Dance Institute, created by world renowned dancer Jacques d’Amboise. Joyful, athletic movement allows children to express themselves creatively and work together toward a common goal. Each class is led by our highly trained teaching artists with live piano accompaniment.
In-School Programs
Year-Long Program
Momentum’s signature program features weekly dance classes during the school day in central Ohio elementary schools. Focused primarily on fourth grade students, the program is part of the classroom’s curriculum and engages the entire class. Designed to strengthen children’s social and emotional development, the program is an essential complement to traditional academic instruction. Benefits include:
- Joyous movement and physical activity
- The opportunity for meaningful connections with classmates
- A sense of pride and accomplishment as students master and perform choreography
- An outlet for processing complex emotions
- The development of mindfulness skills in order to manage stress and anxiety
- Trauma informed support through the arts
The Year-Long program culminates in a grand spring production in a professional theatre featuring 1,000 boys and girls.

Residencies
Momentum Residencies are condensed versions of our Year-Long program. Following the same format, most Residencies are 4-12 weeks long and prepare students for an in-school showcase performance for parents, school personnel and fellow students, and community members.
Early Learners Program
Momentum’s Early Learners program is designed for preschool aged children, engaging them in creative movement and imaginative play. The curriculum corresponds to Ohio Department of Education early childhood standards in areas such as self-management, sequencing, and following directions. Early Learners classes enhance children’s ability to be kindergarten ready.
Chance to Dance
Chance to Dance is designed for elementary children with autism and/or physical disabilities. The program provides children the opportunity to dance and perform to live music and for some, Momentum may be their first meaningful participation in the arts. Chance to Dance is delivered as a residency consisting of 8-10 weekly classes during the school day and culminating in a performance which celebrates each dancer’s unique talents and achievements.
Out of School Programs
Advanced Teams
Momentum invites dancers specially selected from the Year-Long program to become members of the Advanced Teams (Team XL and Team XO) and to continue dancing with Momentum through the 8th grade. The teams participate in afternoon and evening classes learning advanced choreography and performing with children from across Columbus. Our two-week summer intensive, Momentum University, immerses Team XO participants in the arts and provides opportunities to build new relationships and deepen existing friendships with other members. Momentum’s Community Performance Troupe, featuring advanced Team XO dancers, performs at cultural and civic events throughout central Ohio.
After School Residencies:
In partnership with a variety of youth-serving agencies, Momentum conducts residencies for children ages 5-11 years old. Classes are held weekly for a consistent group of participants, and residencies are typically 4-12 weeks long. These out of school residencies are also available for local summer day camps.

Our Impact
Momentum works to empower children through dance, music, and performance. Participants are among our community’s most under-resourced populations who face a myriad of challenges and often have limited access to arts education. Through participation in Momentum, children develop increased self-confidence, resilience, empathy, and teamwork.
“I have witnessed students tap into their undiscovered talents that now push them toward new and exciting paths. Momentum provides the opportunity for students that will impact them as they grow and develop.”
Theresa Eraybar, Columbus City Schools Principal

Participating schools and organizations pay only a small portion of the total cost to deliver the program. As a non-profit organization, Momentum covers the balance of the cost through our fundraising efforts.
